Do Your Really Need to Love What You Do?

"Do You Have Passion For Your Work?"

By: Darius Maslow
Many people think when it comes to work that they have to love what they do. If you truly do have a passion for your work, you are very lucky. Many people work daily jobs that they really have no interest in, but have tried to develop a general interest veering the 20 or 30 year period they have worked at their current job. There is a good rule of thumb. If you stick to this rule, life will be much more enjoyable for you and everyone around you. The rule is making sure you really do enjoy your line of work, but you do not have to enjoy every aspect of it.

Many people take the idea of loving what you do to by far and literal. Everyone at some point in time will have some part of their job that is not that enjoyable. Adding a job that you enjoyed every single minute of every day is not impossible, it's just not that common.

Let's say you work for a company for 15 years. Over this 15 year period, the company has been doing very well financially. You have moved up the corporate ladder and are now vice president of a big division in the company. The economy starts to tank; in your company is not doing so well financially. On top of this, you start to have some problems with some current clients. Some of your employees have done work wrong and it will take a while to correct. Do you immediately go look for a new job? Do you give up everything you have invested in this company for 15 years because it suddenly becomes not fun? There are some people that would say yes. I'm sure the majority of people you ask would say no, you should stick with the company and whether through the storm. There will be parts of your day Sundays they just do not enjoy. It's the way life is.

If you jump ship one time in your life, chances are you will be willing to do it again. There is a point in time if you are playing a losing game, that you must cut your losses. This is not what I'm talking about however. If you have made a commitment to working in a particular career and enjoyed the field, you must work through the bad as well as the good. Do not spend your life wondering from place to place, only in the in not to build anything.
