Internet Marketing for Small Business
"Guiding Small Business Owners"
By: John Whiteley
Internet marketing can be overwhelming at first glance. In this article
I will outline my perception of it as an accountant, consultant with over 25 years of experience in supporting
small business owners. I will present the big picture view to internet marketing. There are hundreds of articles
and websites offering products and training on internet marketing and it can get confusing. My mission is to
support small business owners who need direction in building a successful business
My assumption supporting this article is that the reader has an existing business with established products and
services which will be promoted with internet marketing. You can refer to the website
www.smallbusinessnavigator.com for information in starting up a new business.
The main purpose of internet marketing is to attract
traffic to your website, inform the viewer and then convert them to take action and purchase a product or
service.
The first step is to determine the geographical location of your potential customers, is it local customer traffic,
regional or global. You need to know in order to focus your efforts and attract more paying customers. For example,
a local pet food shop will want to bring in customers from the local area, while a direct mail enterprise will sell
globally.
Determine the keywords you want to include in your website headers, articles, etc. commonly known as Search Engine
Optimization(SEO). The search engines such as Google and Bing look for these keywords in your website when someone
executes a search. Local customers will include the name of their location such as the city or town when entering
their search details in Google. location would not be as important to global customers. Do an analysis of the
keywords used by your competition who have high rankings in Google and Bing. There are software tools available to
assist in this area, Traffic Travis is great software for this purpose. www.traffictravis.com.
Articles are very effective ways to promote products and services. Write informative articles and submit to
publishing sites for viewing. You can tactfully include links to your website or affiliates. You obtain software to
assist you in writing articles or you can hire contractors at a very reasonable price to write an original article
for you.

Pay Per Click (PPC)
If you want a guaranteed source of instant traffic, it doesn’t get any easier than PPC advertising. However, PPC is
also the most expensive traffic source on this list and you’ll always have to pay for it. If you opt for PPC
advertising, be sure to spend time learning how to generate keyword lists, pinpoint effective long tails and split
test your campaigns to minimize wasted ad spend.
